Mike O'Connor has led a restless life. From his birth in a refugee camp administered by his father in post-war Germany, to his frequent and (until recently) unexplained moves as a child, he has always been on the go. That energy, combined with deep curiosity and an eagerness to tell people what he had discovered, propelled Mike into his career as a journalist, first in local television, then for CBS in Latin America during the 1980s and eventually into print. He worked for the New York Times in Central America and the Former Yugoslavia and kept his hand in broadcast by reporting for National Public Radio from Haiti and again from the Former Yugoslavia and the Middle East.

His work has been to study the lives of others. He seldom looked back on the story of his family until he wrote, Crisis Pursued by Disaster, Followed Closely by Catastrophe: A Memoir of Life on the Run. The book seems like a memoir, but it turns out to be more. It becomes the search for the reason the O’Connor family lived so precariously, in danger and on the run. It starts with memories and evolves into an investigation. What was chasing them?

It is a book that searches for the reason behind his family’s flight from middle-class comfort to, at times, deep poverty in Mexico.
